Who we are
About Stick & Signal
A renter-first buying guide for smart home gear that goes up without a drill and comes off clean on move-out day.
Stick & Signal exists for one specific person: the renter who wants real security and smart-home convenience but can’t drill a hole, can’t touch the wiring, and can’t afford to lose a deposit over it. The name is the whole promise — gear that sticks (peel-and-stick mounts, tension fits, over-the-door brackets, retrofit locks) and gives you a signal(a doorbell chime, a motion alert, a camera feed) — all of it reversible.
What this site is
It’s an honest, methodology-first buying guide. We compile the published specs, read the install manuals, do the arithmetic (adhesive versus screws, battery life, the real total cost of a subscription, what actually survives a move), and say plainly what we did and didn’t do. Every product carries our Lease-Safe rating— our read on how reversible its install is — and a live, dated price. Where we’d skip a product, we say so.
Who writes it
I’m Stephen V.— an enthusiast who’s genuinely into this stuff. Stephen is an enthusiast who's genuinely into renter-friendly smart home gear. He doesn't run a test lab or own every gadget here. What he does: read the install manuals, compile the published specs, weigh the adhesive against the door, and total the subscription cost before he calls anything a buy. Where he'd skip a product, he says so. Nothing here is legal advice — for anything to do with your lease, check the actual document and, if it matters, ask your landlord in writing.
That framing is deliberate and it’s honest. I’m not a security installer, an electrician, or a certified anything, and I don’t run a test lab. What I bring is a habit of checking the label against the manual and being straight with you about the trade-offs. If you want a site that claims it endurance- tested twenty doorbells in a lab, this isn’t it — and honestly, most of the sites that make that claim can’t prove it either.
What we don’t do
- We don’t claim hands-on testing of products we don’t own, or invent a “team” that doesn’t exist.
- We don’t publish fake reviews, star ratings, or testimonials. If we can’t source a number, it isn’t on the page.
- We don’t let commissions decide a ranking. When a cheaper or more reversible option is better for a renter, that’s the pick — read how we’re funded on our disclosure page.
- We don’t give legal advice. Anything about your lease or local law is general information — check the document and, when it matters, ask your landlord in writing.
