Streaming Sticks & Boxes

The box or stick that replaces the cable box — Roku, Fire TV and the rest, ranked on interface, Wi-Fi radio and what each one costs you after the cable bill stops.

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we recommend, and we’ll tell you when we’d skip one. Full disclosure.

The streaming device is the cheapest part of cutting the cord and the part people agonise over most. Here is the short version: almost every current device does 4K, and none of them charges you a monthly fee. The $18 stick and the $90 box play the same Netflix at the same resolution. What actually separates them is three things, in this order.

How the home screen treats your apps.Roku puts every app in the same grid. Fire TV puts Amazon’s own video across the top. Neither is wrong, but if you are sharing a TV with people who will not learn a new interface, the neutral grid causes fewer arguments.

Which Wi-Fi radio it has. This is the one almost every buying guide skips, and it is the one that decides whether a 4K stream holds up in the back bedroom. A cheap stick with an older radio two rooms from the router will step a 4K stream down to something that looks worse than the HD you canceled. Our picks state the published radio on every device, and the Wi-Fi coverage side of the site exists because this is usually the real problem.

Whether you can plug in a network cable.Sticks cannot. The boxes — Roku Ultra, Fire TV Cube — can, and a wired 4K stream simply does not buffer. If an Ethernet port is reachable from your TV, the box is worth the extra money and the sticks are not worth troubleshooting.

Start with the full ranking if you want one device for the main TV. Go to best streaming sticks if you are buying three for three TVs. If you have already narrowed it to the two obvious candidates, Roku vs Fire Stick is the head-to-head. And if the TV in question predates smart TVs entirely, the answer is in best device for a non-smart TV— it is simpler than you think and it is almost certainly the cheapest thing on the site.

Two shortcuts if you already know roughly where you are heading. Choosing between the five Fire TV models rather than between platforms: best Fire TV Stick. Weighing Apple’s box against a Roku stick, which is a question about ecosystem rather than capability: Roku vs Apple TV.

Questions about streaming devices

Do streaming devices have a monthly fee?

No. Every device on this page is a one-off purchase with no platform subscription. Roku and Fire TV both include free ad-supported live channels at no cost. What you pay monthly is for the services you choose to add — Netflix, Disney+, a live-TV package — and those cost the same regardless of which device you watch them on.

I have a smart TV already. Do I still need one of these?

Often yes, for two reasons. Smart TV platforms get slow and stop receiving app updates years before the panel wears out, and a $20 stick is a far cheaper fix than a new TV. The second reason is consistency: one platform across every TV in the house means one remote layout and one set of logins.

Which one has the best Wi-Fi?

Of the sticks, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max publishes a Wi-Fi 6E radio and the Roku Streaming Stick 4K advertises a long-range receiver. But a better radio in the stick cannot fix a weak signal arriving at the room — if the TV is a long way from the router, fixing the network beats upgrading the stick. Our Wi-Fi coverage section covers that side.

Is a box worth it over a stick?

Only if you can run an Ethernet cable to the TV, or you genuinely want hands-free voice control. A wired connection removes buffering as a category of problem, which is worth real money on a main TV. If no network port is reachable, the extra you'd pay for a box buys you very little.

Why isn't Apple TV listed here?

Because we only list products we can confirm are currently sold and in stock through our links, and the current-generation Apple TV 4K did not come back as an in-stock listing when we resolved this registry on 7 October 2026. Rather than point a buy button at a 2017 model or a refurbished unit, we left the slot out and said so. It is a good device; we just can't honestly list it today.
