This is the part of Stick & Signal where we slow down and answer the questions the product roundups can’t. A roundup tells you which doorbell to buy. A guide tells you whether you’re even allowed to put one up, how to mount it without losing your deposit, where you can legally point a camera, and how to pull everything cleanly on the day you hand back the keys. These are the “how do I” and “can I” searches that every renter types eventually, written for renters who don’t own the walls.

Two questions run through almost everything here. The first is will it come off clean?Anything you add to a rental should be reversible — adhesive instead of screws, retrofit instead of replacement — so that at move-out the apartment looks the way it did on day one and your deposit comes back whole. The second is am I actually allowed to do this?That answer lives partly in your lease and partly in your state’s law, and we’re careful to tell you when it’s one, the other, or both.
