Dumb alarm or smart sensor?

Answer one question first: do you want to be startled, or notified? A plain contact alarm — like the UltraPro six-pack — is a self-contained siren. It needs no phone, no app and no hub, it keeps working in a Wi-Fi or power outage, and it’s loud enough to wake you and rattle whoever opened the door. That’s the whole job, and for most renters it’s plenty. The smart contact sensor mounts the same way but sends a notification to your phone when the door opens, so you find out even when you’re not home. The catch is that the remote alert and any automations want a SwitchBot Hub, so budget for the hub as part of the pick, not just the sensor.

Where to put them

Cover the openings an intruder would actually use: the front door, any ground-floor or fire-escape window, and a sliding patio door. Adhesive contact alarms love a smooth, clean frame — wipe it down first, and skip rough, dusty, or freshly painted surfaces where the pad won’t grip. Mount the sensor and its magnet so they sit within a few millimeters of each other when the door is shut, or the alarm won’t arm. Can I put a door alarm in an apartment without drilling?

Yes — every alarm here mounts with adhesive strips and runs on a coin-cell battery, so there's no drilling and no wiring. The two pads stick to the door (or window) and its frame, and both peel off cleanly at move-out. Nothing about the install is permanent or visible to a landlord.

Do these alarms need Wi-Fi or a subscription?

The plain contact alarms don't use Wi-Fi at all and never charge a fee — they're standalone sirens that work in an outage. Only the SwitchBot smart sensor uses a network, and only to push the phone alert; there's still no subscription, though remote alerts and automations need a SwitchBot Hub.

How loud are apartment door alarms?
