How portable locks actually work

The Addalock is the original portable door lock: a small metal device that slots into the strike plate(the hole in the frame the deadbolt or latch goes into) of any inward-swinging door, then a pin drops through it so the door can’t be opened from outside — even by someone with a key. It fits in a pocket, takes about ten seconds to place, and adds a lock a master key can’t defeat. The one requirement is an inward-swinging door with a normal strike plate, which is most apartment, dorm and hotel doors.

The door-stop alarm takes the opposite approach: a rubber wedge you kick under the door that physically resists being pushed open, with a built-in 120dB alarmthat goes off the instant someone forces against it. It works on hard floors better than deep carpet, and it’s the pick if you want both a physical block and a loud deterrent in one no-install device. Many people travel with both — the Addalock for a true second lock, the wedge alarm for a noisy backup.

When a portable lock is the right call

Reach for a portable lock instead of a smart lock when: you can’t modify the door at all (dorm, hotel, short sublet); you want security only while you’re inside (both of these are interior devices); or you move often and want one tool that works on every door you sleep behind. If you’re staying longer and want remote control, guest codes, or protection while you’re out, a retrofit smart lockis the better fit — but it can’t travel the way these can.

The limits, honestly
