The settings that do 90% of the work

  • A unique, strong password per device account.Never reuse a password across your camera app and anything else. This single step defeats the most common attack — credential stuffing from a leaked list. A password manager makes it painless.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA). Turn it on for every smart-home account. Even if your password leaks, a login needs the second code. The FTC and CISA both put this near the top of their home-device guidance.
  • Keep firmware updated. Enable automatic updates so security patches install themselves. An unpatched device is the digital equivalent of an unlocked window.

Minimize your exposure by choosing local-storage devices where you can, turning off features you don’t use, reviewing the app’s data settings, and sticking with established brands that publish clear policies.
