Before you spend a cent on a hub, hear the good news: as a renter you very often don’t need one. Smart plugs, most smart bulbs, and Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells connect straight to your router and their own app — the hub adds nothing. So the honest first question isn’t whichhub, it’s whether your setup calls for one at all. If you’re running a plug and a doorbell, save your money.

A hub earns its place in two situations: when you want to run everything by voice from one place, or when you start adding the cheap, reliable sensors that talk over Zigbee or Thread instead of Wi-Fi. For the first, a small Echo on a shelf is the easiest glue there is. For the second, you want a real protocol hub that bridges Zigbee, Thread and Matter. We picked four that cover both needs, every one of them freestanding and plug-in — nothing here mounts to a wall or touches your wiring.

Do you even need a hub?

Start here, because the answer is often no. The whole renter starter kit — a smart plug, a screw-in bulb, a Wi-Fi camera, a battery doorbell — runs on your home Wi-Fi with no hub at all; each device joins your network and its app on its own. You only need a hub once you reach for the parts of a smart home thatdon’tuse Wi-Fi: the small, battery-friendly door and window sensors (and many motion sensors) built on Zigbee or Thread, which need something to talk to. If you’d rather not add sensors and just want to say “turn off the lamp,” a voice hub covers you without any of that. Our smart plug picks are a good example of gear that needs no hub whatsoever.

Voice hub vs. protocol hub

The two Echos are voice hubs: they control Wi-Fi and Matter devices, run your home by voice, and the Show adds a screen that can pull up a compatible doorbell or camera feed when someone rings. What they are notis a Zigbee or Thread bridge, so they won’t run those cheaper sensors on their own. That’s where the Aqara hubs come in — the M3 bridges Zigbee, Thread and Matter and works across Alexa, Google and Apple Home, while the M200 is the smaller, cheaper way into a Matter and Thread setup. Do renters actually need a smart home hub?

Often, no. Smart plugs, most bulbs, and Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells connect straight to your router with no hub. You only need one if you want to run everything by voice from a single device, or once you add sensors that use Zigbee or Thread rather than Wi-Fi.

Is an Echo Dot enough to be my hub?

For most renters, yes. An Echo Dot controls Wi-Fi and Matter devices and runs them by voice, which covers a plug-and-bulb setup completely. Its limit is that it isn't a Zigbee or Thread bridge, so if you plan to add those cheaper sensors you'll want an Aqara hub alongside it.

What's the difference between the Aqara M3 and M200?

The M3 is the fuller hub — it bridges Zigbee, Thread and Matter and works across Alexa, Google and Apple Home, so it runs Aqara's whole sensor range. The M200 is the smaller, cheaper entry point: a Matter controller and Thread border router with fewer bridged protocols. Start with the M200 for a small sensor kit.

Does a smart home hub need to be wired in?

None of these do. Every hub here is freestanding and plug-in — it sits on a shelf and powers from an outlet, with no wiring and nothing mounted. The Aqara M3 offers optional Ethernet if you want it, but Wi-Fi keeps the whole thing hole-free and fully reversible at move-out.
