How we picked
We do not own these and we do not run a lab, so nothing here is a test result. Every number in the cards above was read from the manufacturer’s own published page or spec sheet on the date in the sources, and where a maker does not publish a figure the row says Not publishedrather than a guess — which is why the Tapo card carries a lumen figure and the Govee card does not. Our Lease-Safe rating is editorial and derived from the published install method.
Four criteria set the order, in this priority:
1. What is it stuck to? This is the criterion the rest of the internet skips and it decides the ranking here. A strip on the back of your own television is a different product, in lease terms, from an identical strip on the landlord’s bedroom wall, even though the box is the same. Picks that keep the adhesive on something you own rate higher.
2. Is the maker traceable? This category is drowning in unbranded hundred-foot rolls with no model number, no spec sheet and no company behind them. That matters twice over: you cannot check a specification that nobody publishes, and this is a mains-powered device you leave switched on in a room where you sleep. Every pick here comes from a manufacturer that publishes a product page we could read and quote.
3. Does it work without buying a second box? A strip that needs a bridge, a hub or a controller you do not own is not a $30 purchase. Four of the five picks work out of the box on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; where a hub unlocks more, the card says so in the cons rather than in the marketing.
4. Is the white light any good? Renters buy strips for color and then discover that the thing they use every night is the white. Under a kitchen cabinet in a small apartment, a strip is task lighting, and a published lumen figure and color rendering index are worth more than another twenty scene modes.
Do LED strip lights damage walls? The honest version
Sometimes, and it is almost always the removal that does it rather than the installation. Paint on drywall is a layered system: paper facing, primer, one or two coats of paint. A permanent-bond acrylic tape can end up gripping the paint more firmly than the paint grips the layer under it, and when you peel a long strip quickly, at a sharp angle, the weakest layer in that stack is what gives way. You get a clean-looking strip in your hand and a pale ribbon of primer on the wall.
Four things make the bad outcome more likely, and all four are within your control: fresh paint that has not fully cured, cheap builder-grade flat paint, a long unbroken run rather than short sections, and time — adhesive bonds keep building for weeks. A strip on a bookshelf for a month behaves very differently from the same strip on a bedroom wall for two years.
None of that is a reason to avoid the category. It is a reason to spend five minutes deciding where the tape goes before you unroll anything, which is the next section.
Where to put a strip in a rental
The trick that makes this whole category renter-safe is embarrassingly simple: stick the strip to your own furniture and let it light the landlord’s wall. The light lands in the same place. The tape does not.
Good surfaces, roughly in order of how forgiving they are:
- The back of your TV or monitor. Smooth plastic, invisible, and yours. This is what the TV backlight pick is built around.
- The underside of a shelf or bookcase. Hidden, gives you a wash down the wall, and any residue is on your furniture.
- The back edge of a desk or headboard. Indirect light exactly where you want it, on a surface nobody inspects.
- Inside a kitchen cabinet frame, on a cabinet you brought. In a small kitchen a strip under a shelf is the most useful light in the room. If the cabinets belong to the landlord, use clips.
- A bed frame, a plant shelf, the inside lip of a media unit. Same principle: light bounces, tape stays on your stuff.
Surfaces to keep tape off in a rental:
- Painted drywall — the default plan and the one that generates the damage charges. Use clips if the run has to go on a wall.
- Wallpaper — there is no gentle version of this. Tape on wallpaper takes wallpaper.
- Textured or popcorn ceilings — nothing sticks properly, and what does stick brings texture with it.
- Anything painted in the last few weeks — a repaint before you moved in is common, and uncured paint is the worst case for adhesive.

The clip method, which almost nobody mentions
If the strip genuinely has to run along a wall — a cove above a window, a line behind a desk, a dorm room where the furniture is bolted down — do not use the tape on the back of it. Leave the liner on and hang the strip in removable clips instead.
That is what the Command pick is doing on a list of light strips. A pack of clips costs less than the difference between two of the strips above, holds the strip flat against the surface, doubles as cable management for the run down to the outlet, and is designed from the outset to come off again. You trade a perfectly flush line for a wall you do not have to think about. If you have already stuck a strip down and now need it off, patience is the whole technique: warm the tape gently with a hair dryer on low, work along the strip a few inches at a time, and pull back on itself at a shallow angle rather than out from the wall. Cut it, do not splice it
Strip lights are sold by the roll and nobody’s wall is exactly 16.4 feet long, so cutting is normal — but it is one-directional, and the published rules differ by product. TP-Link publishes cut-to-length marking on the Tapo. Govee publishes cut-to-fit with in-app calibration and states plainly that its strip “can be cut, but it cannot be extended or spliced.” Philips publishes cut points every 13 inches on the Solo lightstrip and sells three separate lengths precisely because you cannot join two.
So measure the run first, buy the length that covers it, and cut down rather than planning to add on. And cut only on the marked points: the copper pads are where the circuit can be interrupted safely, and a cut between them kills the section.
The plug end matters more than the light end
Every strip here is a mains-powered device with a small adapter, running for hours, usually behind furniture. Two habits are worth more than any feature comparison. First, look for a UL or ETL safety mark on the power supply — UL Solutions’ own guidance is to check for the mark before you buy, and it is the single clearest difference between a branded strip and an unbranded roll. Second, do not run the adapter or the strip under a rug, do not daisy-chain adapters into one another, and keep the controller somewhere air can reach it. The privacy end matters too, in a smaller way: these are Wi-Fi devices on a network you may not control. What we did not pick
Unbranded hundred-foot rolls. They dominate the search results and they are genuinely cheap. They get no buy row here for the same reason we gave for unbranded curtain robots and no-name smoke alarm mounts: no manufacturer page, no model number, no spec sheet, and nothing to check a claim against. If you buy one anyway, check for a safety mark on the adapter and treat the adhesive as more aggressive than the branded strips, not less.
Cheap Bluetooth-only strips from real brands. Govee’s $15 rolls are perfectly reasonable for a desk, and we looked at them properly. The listings do not name a model number that we could trace back to a specific Govee product page, so we could not write a spec row we would stand behind. That is a documentation problem rather than a product problem, and it is exactly the standard the rest of this site holds.
TV strips that need a sync box. The high-end TV lighting kits produce a better effect than a camera-based one, and they do it by putting a separate HDMI box between your devices and the television. That is another expensive box, another power outlet and another point of failure for an apartment setup, and it lifts the cost of “lights behind the TV” well past what this page is for.
Hardwired under-cabinet lighting. The correct answer in a kitchen you own, and out of the question in one you rent: it goes behind the cabinet face and into a junction box. If you want the look, a strip on the underside of the cabinet plus a smart plug gets you most of the way with nothing to reverse.
What to buy, in order
If you want one strip and you are not sure where it is going, buy the Tapo. It is the cheapest thing here that a renter would not outgrow, it works with all three assistants without a hub, and at 1,000 published lumens it can be a real light rather than an effect. Add the clip pack if any part of the run touches a wall.
If the strip is going somewhere you look at every evening — a living room, a reading corner — the Hue Solo is the one that looks like lighting rather than a line of dots, and it is the safer long-term bet if you are already invested in Hue. If the reason you want strip lighting is the television, buy the TV backlight kit instead of a general-purpose strip. It is the only pick on this page that puts no adhesive anywhere in the apartment, and it does the one job better than a plain strip can.
