Nearly every recommendation on this site ends the same way: and it goes up with adhesive, so it comes off clean at move-out. That claim is doing a lot of work. It is the reason a retrofit lock beats a replacement one, the reason a peel-and-stick keypad beats a screwed one, and the reason a battery camera beats a wired one. It is also, in the end, a claim about a strip of tape — and tape has failure modes.
The good news is that adhesive mounting is genuinely reliable, and the difference between the mount that holds a doorbell through three winters and the one that falls off a fortnight later is almost never the brand of tape. It is about eight minutes of preparation. This is that eight minutes, written down properly, so that the no-drill approach actually delivers what it promises.
What a bond actually is
Mounting adhesive doesn’t work like glue. It works by flowing, under pressure and over time, into the microscopic texture of a surface until the contact area is enormous relative to the size of the pad. Three consequences follow, and they explain everything else on this page.
Anything between the adhesive and the surface reduces the bond, including a layer of dust you can’t see, the residue from a household cleaner, or the oil from your fingertips. Contamination, not weight, is the usual culprit.
Pressure matters more than people think, because pressure is what drives that flow. A firm thirty-second press is doing real mechanical work; a quick push is not.
Time matters most of all. The flow continues for hours after you fit it. This is why curing time is the single most-ignored instruction in the category, and why so many mounts fail two days in rather than immediately.
Surfaces: the honest list
Excellent. Glass, glazed tile, smooth painted plaster or drywall, gloss or satin-painted wood, uPVC window and door frames, powder-coated or smooth metal. These are the surfaces adhesive was designed for, and on any of them a small device will stay put indefinitely.
Marginal — test first. Lightly textured paint, matt emulsion in poor condition, older varnished wood, exterior surfaces in a cold climate. These can work, but the bond is weaker than it looks. If you must use one, prefer the lightest device you can and check it after a week.
Don’t bother. Bare brick, render, stone, concrete block, raw or unfinished wood, wallpaper of any kind, anything dusty or chalky, and any surface painted in the last few weeks. That last one deserves emphasis because it is counter-intuitive: the problem is not that fresh paint fails to hold. The problem is that it holds beautifully and then comes away from the wall with the mount still attached. A newly redecorated rental is exactly the situation where this bites.

One category earns its own warning here, because it puts far more tape on a wall than anything else in a rental: LED strip lights. The eight minutes that decide it
Decide the position before you commit. Hold the device where you want it. Check the angle, check the cable reaches, check a door or a curtain won’t swing into it. Repositioning a cured mount is where wall damage happens, and it’s entirely avoidable by spending two minutes with the thing in your hand first. This is also why a magnetic mount is worth paying for on a camera — the angle stays adjustable forever.
Clean with isopropyl alcohol, not a spray cleaner. Rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth, wipe the exact spot, let it evaporate. Kitchen and bathroom sprays leave a surfactant film that is literally designed to stop things adhering, and wiping with a damp cloth mostly redistributes dust. Then don’t touch the area again.
Warm a cold surface. Below about 10C, adhesive is stiff and bonds poorly. Thirty seconds of a hair dryer on low, then fit the mount while it’s still warm. This one step is the difference between an outdoor camera mount that survives and one you find on the balcony floor.
Press hard, for thirty seconds. Across the whole plate, steadily. Not a push — a press.
Then walk away. An hour minimum before you hang the device. Twenty-four hours if you can. Fit your mounts in the evening and install the devices the next morning; it costs you nothing and it is the single highest-value habit in this whole guide.
How much weight is realistic
For the devices this site covers, weight is rarely the constraint. An indoor camera, a contact sensor, a keypad, a doorbell mounting plate — all are light, and well within what a properly-fitted adhesive mount handles. The mounts that fail in practice are the ones fitted to a bad surface, in the cold, or loaded immediately.
Two genuine cautions. Leverage multiplies load: a device that stands off the wall on an arm puts far more stress on the top edge of the pad than its weight suggests, so prefer flush mounts where you have the choice. And a cable that gets tugged is a lever — route a charging cable so it hangs freely rather than pulling sideways on the mount, which is the quiet cause of a lot of indoor camera failures.
Where adhesive genuinely isn’t enough is anything load-bearing or safety-critical, and the honest example is a door. A retrofit lock works because it mounts to the deadbolt mechanism, not because tape is holding your door shut — see smart locks over an existing deadbolt for how that actually works. If a product claims adhesive alone will resist force, be skeptical.
Getting it off again
This is the part that decides whether you get your deposit back, and it takes ten unhurried minutes.
Warm the mount with a hair dryer on low, held a few inches away, moving around the edges for a minute or two until the adhesive softens. Then get dental floss, fishing line or a thin guitar string behind the plate and saw sideways. Do not lever with a screwdriver, a knife or a paint scraper — a lever concentrates all the force on one point of the wall surface, which is exactly how you end up with a coin of missing paint. Any residue comes off with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth and a bit of patience.

A note on your lease
Most residential leases don’t mention adhesive at all, because a mount that comes off cleanly leaves nothing to mention. What they do cover is damage, and that’s the risk — not the sticking, but the removing. University housing contracts are the notable exception and frequently prohibit adhesives on painted surfaces outright, precisely because of what happens at the end of the year.
Read yours, and if it’s ambiguous, ask. “I’d like to put up a battery camera on an adhesive mount, it’s removable and I’ll take it with me” is a request that almost always gets a yes and costs you nothing to make.
