The quick rule, and how we got there
The rule — plug for anything that plugs in, bulb for the fixtures you can’t — falls out of three questions. First, is the light on a cord or in a fixture? A lamp, string lights, or a plug-in fixture all run through an outlet, so a plug controls them. A ceiling light or a hardwired sconce has no cord to intercept, so only a bulb can make it smart. Second, do you want to control the light or the thing?A plug controls the whole device on the outlet — useful for a fan or a heater, not just lamps — while a bulb controls only the light, but adds color and dimming a plug cannot. What a smart plug does
A smart plug sits between the wall outlet and whatever you plug into it, and it turns that device’s power on and off on a schedule, by voice, or from your phone. Plug in a lamp and the lamp becomes smart — but so does a fan, a coffee maker, a string of holiday lights, or a phone charger. That is the plug’s superpower: it makes anything with a cord controllable without changing the thing at all. Crucially, it does not touch your light switch. The lamp’s own switch and the wall switch both keep working the way they always did, and the smart control rides on top. The trade is that a plug is on/off only for the whole device — it cannot dim your lamp or change its color, because it is just cutting power at the outlet. What a smart bulb does
A smart bulb replaces the bulb in a lamp or fixture and puts the intelligence in the light itself. Because the electronics are in the bulb, you get things a plug never can: full color, tunable white from warm to cool, and smooth dimming, all from your phone or by voice. It screws into the same E26 socket you already have, so there is no wiring and nothing to install — the most reversible upgrade in the apartment. The bulb is the right tool exactly when a plug cannot reach: a ceiling light, a bathroom vanity, a hallway fixture, any light that is wired in rather than plugged in. It is also the better tool when the light itselfis the point — a color mood in the bedroom, a bright cool white over a desk.
The wall-switch trap
This is the single most important difference, and the one that catches renters out. A smart bulb needs power to be smart, and the wall switch controls that power. Flip the switch off — a roommate on autopilot, a guest, your own hand out of habit — and the bulb goes completely dark. Not dimmed: dead. No app control, no voice, no schedule, until someone flips the switch back on. In a house you own you would just replace the switch. In a rental you cannot touch the wiring, so the smart bulb lives or dies by whether everyone remembers to leave the switch on. Cost per point of control
The money question usually favors the plug for lamps and the bulb for fixtures. A single budget smart plug controls whatever you plug into it — and if that lamp holds a three-bulb cluster, one cheap plug controls all three at once. Ceiling fixtures and lamps you can’t reach
There is one place the plug simply cannot go, and it is worth stating plainly: any light with no cord. Ceiling lights, hardwired wall sconces, bathroom vanities and closet fixtures are all wired straight into the building, so there is nothing to plug a smart plug into. For those, the smart bulb is your only no-wiring option — and it is a good one, because it screws in and unscrews with zero commitment. A worked example: a one-bedroom, light by light
The rule is easier to trust once you walk a real apartment with it. Start at the front door: an entry table lamp plugs into an outlet, so that is a smart plug— now the entry light comes on at dusk automatically. The living room has a floor lamp with a three-bulb cluster; one plug controls all three at once, cheaper than three bulbs, and the wall switch keeps working for guests. Over the couch there is a ceiling light with no cord, so that has to be a smart bulb— just know its wall switch has to stay on.
