If “smart home” sounds like it means a wiring diagram, a hub, and a weekend of frustration, this page is for you. It doesn’t have to be any of that. You can make an apartment meaningfully smarter in an afternoon, with three devices that each take about five minutes: one you talk to, one you plug into an outlet, and one you screw into a lamp. No tools, no drilling, no hub, and nothing your landlord would ever notice.

This is the deliberately minimal starting point — the opposite of overwhelming. An Echo Dot — the thing you talk to.Start with a voice hub because it’s what ties everything together and makes the whole setup feel effortless: “Alexa, turn off the living room.” It’s a good little speaker on its own, it plugs into any outlet, and it controls the other two devices by voice with no extra setup.
