We don’t own these products and we don’t run a lab. What follows is read from each maker’s published specs and install method, applied to the rules most university housing contracts contain. Read your own contract — they differ, and it is the authority, not us.
Read this before you buy anything: the network
The most common way a dorm smart-home plan fails has nothing to do with the products. It’s that campus Wi-Fi is usually an enterprise network, and most consumer smart devices cannot join one. They expect a name and a password. An enterprise network wants a certificate, a browser login page, or a per-device registration — none of which a smart plug has a screen to complete.
Two things to check before you spend a penny. First, whether your university runs a separate device or IoT network for consoles, TVs and smart gear — many do, and registering a device on it takes five minutes with its MAC address. Second, whether personal routers or hotspots are permitted, because a great many campuses ban them outright for interference reasons and will ask you to remove one.

One: a smart plug
If you buy a single thing, buy this. A smart plug turns a lamp, a fan, a string of lights or a coffee maker into something on a schedule or a voice command, and it installs by being plugged in — no contract clause anywhere covers plugging something into an outlet.
In a dorm it earns its place three ways: a desk lamp that comes on before you get back so you don’t walk into a dark room, a fan that switches off after you’re asleep, and a schedule that holds locally, so it keeps running through the campus network outages that happen every term. One safety note, and it matters more in a dorm than anywhere. A smart plug has a rated load and it is not a power strip. Don’t put a space heater, a kettle or anything else that draws heavily through one, and look for a recognized safety mark on anything electrical you buy — UL Solutions publishes guidance on what those marks mean and why the unbranded listing without one is a bad bet in a room where you sleep. Two: a small smart speaker
An Echo Dot is the practical center of a dorm setup, for reasons that are more about the room than the technology. It’s an alarm clock, a speaker, a timer and a hands-free way to turn the lamp off from bed without getting up — which in a room where the bed, desk and wardrobe are within two meters of each other is genuinely the feature. It plugs in and stands on a shelf, so there is nothing to install.
The dorm-specific caveat: you likely share the room, or at least the wall. A voice assistant that announces things at 3am is a roommate problem, and a microphone that is always listening is a conversation worth having with the person you live with rather than presenting as a fait accompli. Three: a camera, pointed carefully
Dorm theft is overwhelmingly opportunistic and overwhelmingly by people who are legitimately in the building — a propped fire door, an unlocked room during a shower, a floor party. A small camera on a shelf facing your own door tells you whether anyone came in while you were out, which is the only question you actually have.

Point it at your own door from across the room. Do notpoint it into the corridor, and think hard before pointing one anywhere in a shared room — your roommate did not agree to be filmed, many states require every party to consent to recorded audio, and a good many housing contracts address recording devices directly. Four: a door alarm, which costs almost nothing
The best value item in a dorm isn’t smart at all. An adhesive magnetic contact alarm on the inside of your room door makes a noise the moment it opens — which is worth more than a camera when you’re asleep in the room, and worth more than a lock you’re not allowed to fit.
Two dorm notes. The adhesive is small and goes on the door and frame rather than a painted wall, which is the surface most contracts actually restrict — but check yours, and remove it with gentle heat rather than pulling. What not to bring
Anything that replaces or attaches to the door.A smart lock needs a deadbolt you’re allowed to modify. A dorm door has neither, and fitting one to a fire door is a serious contract and safety problem, not a gray area.
A personal router or mesh system, unless IT explicitly permits it. Most campuses prohibit them.

A hub, at least at first. Everything above works over Wi-Fi with no bridge, which is one fewer thing to plug in and one fewer thing to register on the network. If you later want sensors and automations, our smart home hubspage is there — but a dorm room is the last place that needs one.
What the whole thing costs
A plug, a Dot, a cheap camera and a multipack of door alarms is a modest amount of money — comparable to a couple of textbooks — and every piece of it plugs in, stands up or peels off. Nothing is drilled, nothing is screwed, nothing needs the overhead light, and the whole lot fits in a rucksack at the end of the year, which is precisely the point.
