The home-security industry is built on the monthly fee. The big names — the ones with the yard signs and the call centers — want a two- or three-year monitoring contract, professional installation that drills into your home, and equipment you don’t really own. For a renter, that’s three deal-breakers in one: you can’t drill, you won’t be here in three years, and you don’t want a bill that outlives your lease. The good news is you don’t need any of it.

You can assemble genuinely effective security from devices that record or run locally, install without drilling, and charge no monthly fee. Below is the four-piece kit we’d build: a camera, a video doorbell, a smart lock and a door/window alarm, each the no-fee pick in its category. What “no subscription” really buys you

The subscription model asks you to rent access to your own footage and your own alerts. Cancel, and the recording stops — sometimes the gear stops entirely. A no-fee kit flips that: you pay once, you own the hardware, and it keeps working forever, whether you’re here another year or gone next month. The trade-off is that you self-monitor — there’s no call center dispatching police for you — but for most renters, phone alerts and recorded evidence are exactly what “monitoring” actually delivers anyway, minus the contract.

Optional add-ons and the honest limits

Add an Echo Showif you want to pull up the doorbell or camera feed by voice, and a portable lock for travel or a dorm. Be clear about what this kit is and isn’t: it’s excellent at seeing, recording and deterring, and it costs nothing to run — but it doesn’t summon a guard. Is no-subscription security as good as a monitored system?

For most renters, it covers what matters: seeing who's there, recording evidence, getting phone alerts, and deterring intruders — with no contract and nothing drilled. The one thing it doesn't do is dispatch a professional monitoring center to call the police for you. If you specifically need that dispatch service, a no-fee kit can't replace it; for everything else, it's excellent.

How much does a no-subscription renter security kit cost?

It's a one-time cost with no ongoing fee. You can start with just the camera for well under fifty dollars and add the doorbell, lock and alarms over time. Because there's no subscription, the total cost of ownership stays flat for as long as you own the gear — unlike a monitored plan that bills every month.
